Our bodies need specific amounts of nutrients to function optimally. And, while a healthy diet will include most of the nutrients our body needs, the foods we eat don’t always give us enough. Vitamins and other supplements can be a good way to fill in the gaps in our diet when they occur.
However, different bodies need different nutrients, and for women, certain nutrients are especially important. Below are some of the daily women’s vitamins someone should take if she isn’t getting enough of these nutrients through diet alone.
Calcium
Calcium is important for bone health, which can become a problem for female bodies much sooner than males. Older women are at higher risk for developing osteoporosis than men because hormonal shifts during menopause directly affect bone density.
Calcium also plays a role in blood clotting, normal cell function, and regulating heartbeat and muscle contractions.
Iron
Iron is a mineral that is essential for cell growth and hormones. It enables the blood to carry oxygen throughout the body. Our bodies use iron to make two blood proteins:
1) Hemoglobin, which carries oxygen from the lungs to the rest of the body, and
2) Myoglobin, which carries oxygen to muscles
For women, heavy menstruation, being active, and pregnancy can all be factors that can cause them to have low iron. For these reasons, an iron supplement may be necessary to ensure their bodies are getting the proper amount.
Folate
Folate (folic acid) helps build a healthy brain and spinal cord. It also makes DNA and RNA, the building blocks of cells.
Adults and children need folate to build normal red blood cells and prevent anemia. However, it’s especially important for pregnant women because it helps prevent birth defects like spina bifida.
Vitamin D
Vitamin D helps to move calcium and phosphorus (minerals that support bone health) into your bloodstream. When your body doesn't have enough vitamin D, it will take calcium and phosphorus from your bones. Over time, this leads to bones becoming thin and being at risk for osteoporosis and fractures.
Vitamin D is particularly important for women who:
- Don’t get frequent direct exposure to sunlight
- Don’t regularly drink milk or eat dairy foods fortified with vitamin D
- Are pregnant and breastfeeding
- Are over 50 years old because the body becomes less efficient at processing vitamin D as we age
Biotin
Biotin supports your skin, hair, and eye health. Also known as vitamin H, biotin is one of the B complex vitamins that help the body convert food into energy. Our Maxi-Hair® Plus Biotin supplement is a great source of biotin for your hair, skin, and nails.
Collagen
Collagen is a protein the body produces, and it plays an essential role in the structure and function of skin, cartilage, bones, and more. With aging, our skin produces less of the oil that it once did, leading to drier skin and increasing fine lines and wrinkles. Taking a collagen supplement can improve skin hydration, elasticity, and roughness.
Multivitamins
If getting all the vitamins and minerals you need each day feels overwhelming, taking a multivitamin can be the perfect solution to help fill those nutritional gaps.
